On March 19 the NACCTX, together with Brazos Bookstore, organized a meet and greet with award winning Dutch author Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer. A couple of days earlier, the translation of his bestselling book 'La Superba' was released in the USA and we were thrilled with the privilege of Ilja's visit to Houston, just before he travelled on to the East Coast for book-promotions in Washington DC and New York.
In the intimate setting of Brazos Bookstore (http://www.brazosbookstore.com), with a sparkling glass of Prosecco, Ilja Leonard Pfeiffer shared with the audience, how a quite impulsive bike-trip from Leiden to Rome in 2008, ended prematurely in the city of Genua. A stop, initially meant as a refreshing pitstop pit stop for a couple of days to recover from 41 days of cycling, became a story of love for the city of Genua and has turned into a stay of 8 years and many more to come.
Ilja's love and fascination for the city of Genua has only grown deeper over time and in response to a question from the audience, whether he will soon become an Italian, he responded that he has become an Italian by heart, but will nevertheless keep his Dutch nationality. Ilja actually mentioned that living in Genua had made him more European than anything else.
It was the very first time that the NACCTX hosted a Dutch author in Houston and hopefully this marks the beginning of a great tradition. Brazos Bookstore and Deep Vellum Publishing were excellent partners in making this happen.
A limited number of signed copies of 'La Superba' are still available at Brazos Bookstore - we wish you an interesting read!
